Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana
Most experts thought the next opponent for Floyd Mayweather would be the up and coming Adrian Broner. The up and coming Broner, touted by many as a legitimate contender to the crown of Mayweather, ran into a brick wall in the hands of Argentinean Welterweight Marcos Maidana. In December of 2013 Maidana knocked down Broner twice, capturing the WBA Welterweight Championship belt in the process and running his record to 35-3. Maidana's defeat of Broner made him the next opponent for the undefeated Mayweather, considered by everyone as the best pound for pound boxer in the world.
Maidana's victory set up the biggest fight of his career, a May 3rd bout versus Mayweather at the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas. The upcoming bout will be the 27th time that Mayweather has defended a title since becoming a belt holder. Due to his superior boxing ability and ring mastery he's rarely been challenged during his incredible run.
Defeating Broner is one thing, it's a whole different challenge in defeating Mayweather. In the last decade of dominance the champ known as "Money" has rarely been challenged. The 37-year-old champion is a five-division champion with eight world titles and the unified champion in three different weight classes. Since 2007 Mayweather has essentially set up shop at the MGM Grand, winning his last nine fights dating back to 2007.
Maidana, known for his toughness and knockout ability, has a 91% knockout-to-wins ratio, indicative of his ability to KO opponents. His knockout ability has given those in the sport who don't like Mayweather the hope that the Argentinean could be the player to end Mayweather's unbeaten streak. Like those before him though, it will take much more than punching power to defeat Mayweather. The champion, for all his bombast and attention seeking tendencies, is a master who uses is unparalleled knowledge of the ring to keep his opponents off-balance and outpoint them through superior defense and counter-punching ability. Maidana could make things interesting if he somehow uses his power and punching ability to keep Mayweather off balance and turn the fight into a brawl, something few fighters have been able to accomplish with Mayweather.
Maidana could make it interesting an even land a few big punches, but Mayweather's ring mastery should win out in the end.
